Numbers and Naming: Adults typically have 16 maxillary and 16 mandibular teeth which are numbered starting with the upper right maxillary 3rd molar tooth as #1, the left 3rd maxillary molar tooth at #16, the left mandibular 3rd molar tooth as #17 and the right 3rd mandibular molar tooth as #32 . Many individuals have extracted wisdom teeth- so it can be challenging to try and number teeth if an individual is missing these reference teeth. When numbering teeth I like to use the central incisors as additional references teeth. The maxillary central incisors are 8 and 9 and the mandibular incisors are 24 and 25.
